It happens to all of us. In one way or another, we all experience some level of stress in our lives. The good news is that it’s not all bad! Yes, that’s right, some stress is good for us, but too much can wreak havoc on our lives if we don’t learn to deal with it in healthy ways. And who would have guessed that missionaries experience an incredible amount of more stress than the average person!
That’s right! For those of us living cross-culturally, there are even more stress factors that we experience. From learning to communicate in a new language to navigating relationships in a foreign culture, just day-to-day living can put an enormous amount of strain on our lives.
Others of us are missionaries in our own home country and are experiencing other unique stressors that come along with that, such as family asking why we don’t “get a normal job” and trying to raise enough support to live on from our local churches, or trying to balance ministry with caring for the needs of children or aging parents.
Regardless of our situation, it is helpful to step back and appreciate that this beautiful, complex life that we live as missionaries has its unique challenges. If we want to live healthy, resilient lives on the mission field we will have to get a good understanding of these stressors and how we can cope with them in the best ways.
With that in mind, we would like to invite you to join us for a short seminar covering the topics of Stress, Cross-cultural Stress and Stress Management, especially for missionaries. Thankfully we are not alone in what we face as missionaries and we can draw great strength, hope and understanding from one another.
Carrie Webb, Catherine Cowen and Ryan K. will be teaching this seminar and I can tell you it is excellent and a great resource for all missionaries at any stage of your journey. Whether you are just starting out on your DTS or have been serving for 40 years, I believe you will find this seminar to be a real source of encouragement and can give you tools to help you not only survive but thrive in this missionary life.
We hope you’ll join us!
